The Journey to Eloise Begins

I am a strong believer in Serendipity and the Universe giving you things you don’t know you yet need.  While my dad was hospitalized during the summer of 2005 I was well looked after by our Zionsville neighbors, particularly the Richardsons.  On more than one occasion I enjoyed brownies or ice cream or just the comfort of knowing I wasn’t “home alone.”  One afternoon Deb asked if Leon and I were going to parent.  I told her I had no idea and if we did, we would adopt.  With that she whipped out an index card, wrote down the name and number of an attorney and said, they are absolutely the best.  I thanked her and stuck the index card in my handbag, where it sat for the next 2 years.

As we prepared to move to Dallas in the summer of 2007, Leon was finishing his residency, preparing for his fellowship and finally seeing the light at the end of the tunnel. I was beginning to feel like myself again and we decided to begin finding out more about adoption and our options. I found the index card in a summer handbag and put it on my bulletin board.  After we were settled in Dallas, we made the call.

All I can recall from that conversation was the attorney saying, “you guys are great candidates and we could get you a baby today.” I thought I was going to pass out.  I said, “oh no not today.”  He told me to relax he just meant that as a reference to our appeal for birth moms. He then told us not to turn in our profile to his office until we were 100% ready to have a baby within a week.  That statement terrified me.  A week, don’t we get 9 months like everyone else??!!!  He then explained that most birth moms make a decision in the final trimester and it could be days or weeks from when we find out we are going to be parents, to when we are parents.  I took this advice VERY seriously.  We had lots of other hoops to jump through first;  home study visits, FBI background checks, and writing the profile, but our journey was beginning…
