Why This Girl Isn’t Coming Home

The Catholic Church has put a lot of time and effort into their new campaign to get wayward Catholics to come back to the church. You can take a look at their site here.   While there are lots of Catholics in my life that I love dearly, I could no longer morally be a Catholic.  This recent act by the Archdiocese of Denver is the latest example of why.  A child who has attended Sacred Heart of Jesus preschool has been told she can’t return to the Catholic school next year because her moms are gay.  Yep. Nothing says welcome home like bigotry.  The official statement said  “Homosexual couples living together as a couple are in disaccord with Catholic teaching.”  According to the Archdiocese, parents who enroll their kids at Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic School are expected to follow the Catholic Church’s beliefs.  So I am assuming all the children of divorce or those conceived outside of marriage will be receiving a similar letter very soon?  I am not so sure this is what Jesus would do.

You can read more about this blatant hypocrisy here and about the awesome Catholic parents and staff who are disgusted by this decision and are considering pulling their kids out of the school in support of this family here.

Thanks for sharing your ’2 cents worth’…. I, being a Catholic, totally agree. The church has no right to censor the parents of that little girl.

I was shocked to find out this was happening here in Colorado and not in Kansas.

Lastly- and I’m saying this as a PR person who works on stuff like this all the time- the ‘Catholics Come Home’ glossy PR Campaign is a complete waste of money and counterproductive at best. It really only reminds people why the church is in trouble in the first place. (Why is the Catholic Church running advertising on cable TV right after a Doritos commercial? Oh, right, they need more revenue to settle unconscionable lawsuits and make up for the thousands of people who are leaving in droves.)

I just think of all the homeless people- families living in poverty- people whose communities are devastated because of earthquakes that they cannot control- (I’m looking at you Pat Robertson). I wonder how much these people could benefit from the millions of dollars spent on a stupid PR campaign designed to do one thing- raise money.

Sorry to sound like Leon and his good friend Tim Tebow this morning, ;-)

I’ve been reading the updates on this story and have a few thoughts. This is a religious based private school and in my mind has the right to include and exclude whoever they choose. If they want a school made up entirely of red-haired cyclopses that’s up to them, although they’d be pretty lousy at sports. After all, I do believe our most precious God-given constitutional right is to be as ignorant as a cave man. Secondly, if you are said church with said private school, don’t lie and say, “it’s because they aren’t living with Catholic values” when there isn’t a single family at that school who is “living Catholic values”. The problem here is that if you use birth control, you can hide it, if you support the right to choose, just don’t say it, if you feel women should have equal standing in the church or that priests should marry, just don’t mention that, if you ever felt that some people are so evil, the world is better of if they are put to death, keep a lid on it, or if you think it’s not necessarily healthy to portray sex as the original sin, keep it to yourself. You can’t hide having 2 moms. It’s like “don’t ask, don’t tell” for catholics. If the Church just doesn’t like gay folks, and doesn’t really care about the other rules, just say it, so we can agree on that point and move on. There would be a lot less confusion. Thirdly, if you are an educated committed gay couple with a child, why on Earth would you want to educate said child in that atmosphere? It’s like taking your black and jewish wife to a Klan rally and not understanding why everyone didn’t have a good time. The world is full of smart, loving, and compassionate Catholics who were at the forefront of the civil and human rights movements of the past century and until the Church starts listening to these people it will sadly be stuck in the dark ages.

Yes. I propose a new PR Campaign. Instead of ‘Catholics Come Home’, they should be spending millions of dollars on ‘Heterosexuals, people with Heterosexual parents who have never been divorced, misogynists with a lot of money to help fight lawsuits: Come Home’ Red haired cyclopses who are terrible at sports need not apply.

More than 12 billion years of cosmic history are shown in this unprecedented, panoramic, full-color view of thousands of galaxies. This photo is one small point in the sky, and your galaxy is one small point within this point. The catholic church doesn’t speak for me.

Thanks God! That is the best news I have heard all week.
