One of my personal goals for the year (different list than resolutions) is to read an average of one book per month. This is what I have so far if you are interested in something new to read.
1. The girl with the Dragon Tattoo- good book, strange story, sometimes hard to keep the character names straight since they are all Swedish and have too many consonants.
2. I was Told There’d be Cake- Brooke gave me this one, good. The author is a little too much for me, much preferred Bright Lights Big Ass which Brooke recommended last year.
3 . Half Broke Horses- Anything by Jeannette Wall is awesome. If you haven’t read The Glass Castle I highly recommend it.
4. Are you There Vodka, It’s me Chelsea- I love Chelsea Handler’s bitter yet hilarious sense of humor. This is a quick read of her life that explains a lot of the why.
I would also suggest a couple of Kenyan books
Decolonising[SIC]the Mind by Ngugi Wa Thiongo’o and It’s Our Turn to Eat by Michaela Wrong (John Githongo’s story. It Our Turn to Eat is phenomenal, and it clearly explains the post-election violence and why it could happen again.
Okay, my 2 cents..
In regards to “I was Told There’d be Cake”: I told you it was a bit much. Parts of it were good, but others were just a little over the top for my taste.
Half Broke Horses is on my desk for the next book. If it is half as good as the “Glass Castle” it’s worth the read!
I hate Chelsea Handler because she hates Tori Spelling. You have to have loyalties in life, right?
Thanks Dawn for the recommendations. I will add them both to my queue. I don’t think Half Broke Horses is quite as good but it certainly is a good read to help understand some of the crazy going on in Glass Castle.
